Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching has called on government employees and the public to exercise restraint when making statements, cautioning against the use of impolite or unsuitable language at any time, not just during election periods.
Teo emphasised that discourse touching on matters of race, religion and royalty—collectively known as 3R issues—should be strictly avoided in official communications. She made the remarks in Putrajaya on June 15 after opening an industry training course on responsible journalism and media accountability.
The minister's statement comes amid scrutiny of Department of Community Communications director-general Mohd Hisyamuddin Ghazali, who took office on June 9, following allegations that he has made questionable remarks in his role. Teo noted that she had not yet had an opportunity to discuss the matter directly with Mohd Hisyamuddin, who replaced Datuk Ismail Yusop in the position.
Teo stressed that her guidance applies broadly to all segments of society, with particular emphasis on those in public service roles who shape official messaging. She underscored the importance of maintaining professional standards in government communications at all times, regardless of circumstance.
