Mohamad Zakir Jaafar entered a guilty plea on July 7 to two counts of rape and one charge of outraging modesty, with six additional charges—three involving further sexual offences and three related to possession of weapons—to be taken into account during sentencing. The systematic abuse unfolded within the victim's own home, where she lived alone, and only came to an end when her sons discovered evidence of the assault recorded on their installed CCTV system.
The victim, now 71, had been diagnosed with severe dementia in February 2019, a condition that had progressively robbed her of cognitive function and judgment. By January 2023, cognitive assessments revealed she scored zero out of ten on a standardised test measuring mental capacity, underscoring the profound nature of her neurological decline. Medical and psychological evaluations confirmed she lacked the mental competence to consent to any sexual relationship, while also demonstrating poor awareness of her personal safety and inability to make sound decisions about her own wellbeing. This clinical assessment would prove crucial to prosecutors in establishing not only the nature of the crime but the predatory calculation underlying the perpetrator's actions.
The chain of events began innocuously in June 2022 when Zakir's wife encountered the confused elderly woman wandering lost near their neighbourhood. Acting compassionately, the wife helped her find her way home by checking the address listed on her identity card. Upon learning of this encounter, Zakir learned that the woman lived alone and that her sons visited only occasionally—information that would prove fateful. About a week later, Zakir deliberately crossed paths with the victim near a shopping mall and walked her home, during which she revealed her solitary living arrangement and sparse family contact. Rather than alerting her family or checking on her welfare, Zakir assessed that her obvious disorientation and apparent senility made her a target.
Over the following months, Zakir made at least five separate visits to the widow's flat, consistently arriving late at night after completing his work shift. His modus operandi followed a deliberate pattern: he would display pornographic material to the woman before forcing her to engage in oral sex and committing rape. Zakir later admitted to investigators that he deliberately exploited her cognitive impairment, believing her condition would prevent her from reporting the assaults to anyone or even comprehending what was happening to her. This calculated predation reflected a chilling understanding of her vulnerability and his perceived immunity from consequences.
The abuse continued unchecked until January 3, 2023, when the victim's sons, having installed security cameras in the living room, began reviewing footage. The younger son was examining the recordings when he witnessed Zakir entering the flat and assaulting his mother. Horrified and galvanised into action, he immediately informed his elder brother, and together they filed a police report the same day. Zakir was arrested within hours of the report being made, ending the months-long cycle of abuse.
